The Cipher Bureau

A mobile cryptogram and detective game with a noir atmosphere: players decipher documents to solve cases.

Overview

The Cipher Bureau is a mobile game about reading other people’s secrets. Each case is a set of encrypted documents; deciphering them, letter by letter, reveals evidence and moves the investigation forward. Daily ciphers and a library of standalone puzzles sit alongside the cases.

It is built to work offline: progress stays on the device and no account is needed. New cases and texts are delivered as signed content packages, so stories can be added without releasing a new version of the app.

How it is built

  • Mobile application in Flutter and Dart for iOS and Android.
  • Editorial workflow on Directus, with a web-based editorial studio for writing, reviewing and approving texts per language.
  • Content released as versioned, signed packages that the app verifies before use.
